SaturDIY: Check Your Home’s Exterior

Weatherstripping

Spend a Saturday afternoon this month maintaining your home’s exterior. Your labor will pay off with more than just enhanced curb appeal: properly maintaining your home’s exterior can save you money on heating costs and expensive repairs in the future.

  1. Foundation: Cut back shrubs and trees that are growing too close to the foundation, and check the entire foundation for invasive vines like English Ivy. If you find clinging vines, cut them back and remove any suckers that could damage masonry.

  2. Siding: Power wash siding to wash away dirt and pollen that collected over the summer. Check for flaking paint, which can make siding and shingles vulnerable to rotting or water leaks; sand and re-paint problem areas, and check for loose siding and repair as needed.

  3. Windows and Doors: Examine windows and doors for gaps or openings that let cold air seep into your home. Easily seal these openings with Mortite Caulking Cord, the original do-it-yourself Just press it in place with your fingers to form a weatherproof seal—no caulking gun required!
